VALE RON ARTHUR

🖤💛 VALE RON ARTHUR

The Mitcham Football Netball Club wishes to advise that Life Member and dual Premiership Player Ron Arthur passed away on Sunday, 25 October 2026.

As many of Ron’s Mitcham teammates will be aware, Ron had been battling illness since July 2025. Earlier this year, Ron was advised that further treatment was no longer viable. From that point on, Ron continued “the good fight”, determined to remain positive and battle on — just like the “tough-as-nails” old-style footballer he was — right through to the final siren.

Ron came to Mitcham from Kingsville Football Club, now known as Yarraville, and first played for Mitcham in 1965 at the age of 24 under Coach Ron Newport.

He quickly established himself in the Seniors with his fast, running style and ability to win the football. A leading player for Mitcham, Ron was also selected multiple times in the EDFL representative team.

In 1970, Ron won the Mitcham Best & Fairest Award in a premiership year under Captain-Coach Gary Arnold. At 30, Ron was the oldest player in that premiership side.

But Ron still had plenty of football left in him.

Five years later, at the age of 35, he played in Mitcham’s 1975 Premiership, becoming the only player to play in both the 1970 and 1975 premiership teams. In typical Ron fashion, he had actually stated his age as being considerably younger at the time!

Ron’s outstanding service to Mitcham was recognised with Life Membership in 1974, alongside teammate Graeme “Chimpy” Charles.

He eventually retired from football at Mitcham in 1977 at the age of 37, having played close to 200 games for Mitcham and more than 300 games across his football career, including his time at Kingsville.

Ron was known for his friendly, cheerful and positive nature. He was an avid sportsman, a wonderful human being, a devoted family man, and someone who was loved and deeply respected by so many.

Our thoughts and sincere condolences go to Ron’s family — son Darren, daughters Angela and Melinda, their partners and grandchildren, Ron’s partner Jill, and the wider family.

Ron leaves behind a wonderful legacy at the Mitcham Football Netball Club and will always be remembered as a Life Member, dual Premiership Player and much-loved Mitcham Tiger.

Rest peacefully, Ron.

Thank you for everything you gave to Mitcham.
